As the largest inland natural lake in the State of Ohio, Chippewa Lake is the sparkling blue jewel of Medina County. This 330-acre body of water was formed by natural processes as glaciers receded from the landscape some 14,000 years ago.
It’s easy to see why visitors have been drawn to its shores since the first settlers arrived in the area. The pull of its glassy waters remains strong for anglers, for boaters, and especially for those who need a retreat from the daily grind to be refreshed by the lake breeze and picture-postcard views.
Chippewa Lake Park: Tumble Bug Trailhead

A portion of the former Chippewa Lake Amusement Park, acquired by the Medina County Park District (MCPD) in 2020, is now open to visitors as of May 15. The reopening marks the debut of the Tumble Bug Trailhead, located at 5796 Longacre Lane in Chippewa Lake, Ohio.
This is the first phase of development at the former amusement park, offering new opportunities for the public to explore and enjoy the historic property. Amenities in this phase include a parking area, restrooms, a 20’ x 28’ shared-use picnic shelter, and a half-mile accessible gravel loop trail. In the coming years, the trail will be extended to connect with the site of the former Tumble Bug ride, further enhancing the visitor experience.
A future phase of Chippewa Lake Park will lead to the old Ferris wheel. That area remains closed while we are in the planning stages. There are no trails, and trespassers have been cited. Plus, there are ticks, bees, snakes, and plenty of other creepy crawlies.
As part of this initial phase, MCPD is proud to partner with the Chippewa Lake Historical Society (CLHS). The organization leases a park-owned house at the corner of Longacre Lane and Lake Road and operates a museum at the site. The museum preserves and shares the rich history of the beloved amusement park and surrounding community. The museum is open on Saturdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 10 a.m. until Noon. Please note that the museum will not be open on August 8 due to the car show.
The opening of the Tumble Bug Trailhead represents an exciting step in bringing new life to a treasured local landmark, blending outdoor recreation with historical preservation.
“This is the first step in making Chippewa Lake Park a destination once again, albeit a different kind of park this time,” said Nathan Eppink, MCPD director. “Since 2020, we’ve created a master plan with public input, cleaned up crumbling debris and asphalt in the old park, and brought on the Chippewa Yacht Club and Chippewa Lake Historical Society as official partners. It’s an exciting time for the park district, our neighbors, and all of Medina County.”
Pets are permitted on leash. Biking is also permitted. Golf carts are not permitted on the gravel trail. Tumble Bug Trailhead hours: 6 a.m. to one hour past sunset.
Chippewa Lake Park: Birding and Bridle Trail
EXCITING NEWS! The trail has grown by another 1.2 miles! With the new extension now open, visitors can enjoy 3.5 miles of mowed trails winding through a scenic 123-acre cool-season grassland habitat in Westfield Township. Whether you’re birdwatching, horseback riding, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, there’s even more to explore.
Trail options include:
• Loop 1: 1.18 miles
• Loop 2: 0.93 mile
• Connector Trail (between Loops 1 and 2): 0.19 mile
• NEW! Loop 3: 1.2 miles

⚠️ Please note: Hikers and riders must cross Ballash Road to access the new Loop 3 extension. There are traffic signs and a painted crosswalk to alert motorists.
The trailhead is located at 7782 Ballash Road, just west of Chippewa Lake and south of Krabill Lodge. Amenities include a gravel parking lot with a 40-foot-wide entrance that accommodates horse trailers, along with 10 paved and striped parking spaces for smaller vehicles. Please note that bicycles are not permitted on the trails.
Chippewa Lake is a favorite destination for birdwatchers, with a variety of species using the area throughout the year. During spring migration, many duck species stop at the lake to rest before continuing their journey to breeding grounds in Canada and the western United States.
