The race is on to search for meteorites after a 6-ton meteor impacted Earth’s atmosphere with the force of 250 tons of TNT over Ohio this week. A simple Google search will uncover explosive results! HOWEVER, even though it’s tempting to search for your own piece of space rock, finding one would be extremely rare.

As we learn more about the meteor and its possible impacts, please remember to STAY ON TRAILS to prevent erosion, protect plant life, and avoid having a run-in with (ahem) Bigfoot. Metal detectors are PROHIBITED in our parks, too. Don’t worry — we’ll be the first to let you know if the meteor was really a space capsule from Krypton. You needn’t brave the elements to go look.

Please keep these MCPD rules in mind while visiting the parks:

1.2 DEFACEMENT, DESTRUCTION, DISTURBANCE, AND/OR REMOVAL – No person shall injure, deface, destroy, disturb, or remove any part of a park, including but not limited to buildings, signs, equipment, trees, flowers, shrubs or other vegetation, fruit or seed thereof, rock, mineral, fossil or archeological artifact, or mammals, birds, or any other wildlife whether alive or not, with the exception of legally obtained fish.

 1.3 METAL DETECTORS PROHIBITED – The use of metal detectors within the confines of park property is prohibited without prior written permission of the director.
